Mortality, major medical, surgical and liability protection for performance horses, ranch horses and backyard partners alike — plus Farm & Ranch coverage for the place they live and professional liability for trainers, instructors and equine service providers. Written by a horsewoman and former veterinary technician who understands what's at stake.

Select the pieces that fit your program. Every combination is quoted individually — nothing here is a package you have to take whole.
Mortality is life insurance for your horse. It responds if your horse dies from an accident, injury, illness or disease, and covers humane destruction when a veterinarian recommends it. Every other equine coverage is written on top of a mortality policy.
Major Medical and Medical Assistance coverage helps provide financial protection when your horse experiences an unexpected injury, illness, or disease during the policy period. These coverage options can help offset eligible veterinary expenses, giving you greater peace of mind when your horse needs medical care.
Coverage options may include:
Eligibility, coverage limits, deductibles and plan options depend on your horse's age, value, discipline and individual circumstances. The Major Medical plan families require an insured value of $20,000 or more; External Accident Major Medical and Medical Assistance are written at any value.
Coverage is available for horses from 31 days of age, subject to carrier guidelines and underwriting approval. Most plans are written through 20 years old; External Accident, Basic and Special Major Medical and Zero Deductible Surgical have no upper age limit.
Major Medical and Medical Assistance coverage works alongside equine mortality insurance to provide broader financial protection for your horse and help you prepare for unexpected veterinary expenses.
Additional Optional Equine Insurance Coverages
Additional coverage options may be available depending on your horse, discipline, and individual needs.
Classic Major Medical
The broadest plan family, with four limits and a choice of deductible. Requires an insured value of $20,000 or more, ages 31 days through 20 years, and carries 20% co-insurance.
Basic Major Medical
No co-insurance at all — you pay the deductible and the plan pays the rest up to the limit. Lameness and diagnostics carry their own sublimits. Requires an insured value of $20,000 or more, ages 31 days and up. Barrel horses qualify at the $7,500 limit only.
Special Major Medical
The step up from Basic — no co-insurance, and diagnostics run to half the limit rather than a flat sublimit. Requires an insured value of $20,000 or more, ages 31 days and up.
External Accident Major Medical
Covers colic, accidental injury and acute illness such as EPM, West Nile, EHV-1 and Lyme. Any insured value qualifies, the payout is not capped at your horse’s value, and there is no co-insurance. Ages 31 days and up.
Medical Assistance
The closest thing to full major medical for a horse below the $20,000 value threshold. Covers accident, illness, surgery, lameness, regenerative therapy and diagnostics, with lower sublimits than the Major Medical plans. Ages 31 days through 20 years.
* Deductible and copay options depending on the coverage plan selected
Sometimes, you don't need comprehensive medical coverage—you just want a little extra protection for the big, unexpected expenses. Surgical endorsements offer an affordable way to help cover eligible surgical costs and can be tailored to your horse's needs. Multiple endorsements may also be combined for added protection.
Surgical
Non-elective surgery under general anesthesia, for horses 31 days through 20 years old. Aftercare runs to 50% of the cost of surgery, or 15 days from surgery.
Zero Deductible Surgical
The same non-elective surgery cover with nothing out of pocket before the plan responds. No value cap and no use restriction, for horses 31 days and older.
Colic Treatment
Stacks on top of the emergency colic surgery already included with your mortality policy, and covers colic treated medically as well as surgically. Requires an insured value of $15,000 or more, ages 31 days through 20 years, any use.
* Deductible and copay options depending on the coverage plan selected
Surgical coverage can be added on its own or stacked with any of the medical plans. Choose the limit that fits your horse — on the standard Surgical plan the payout is the lesser of the limit or your horse’s insured value, while Zero Deductible Surgical has no value cap. Racehorses are written on a separate surgical form; ask Emily.
Owning a horse comes with plenty of rewards—and a few unexpected risks. Private Horse Owner's Liability coverage can help protect you if your horse accidentally causes bodily injury or property damage to someone else.
Whether it's a bite or kick, a horse getting loose and causing an accident, or another unexpected situation, liability coverage can help protect you from the financial consequences of a covered claim.
Coverage may also help provide legal defense if you are sued, even when a claim is ultimately found to be without merit.
Private Horse Owner's Liability gives you added peace of mind knowing you have protection in place for the unexpected.
Written for privately owned, non-commercial horses. Lessons, leasing, boarding for others, breeding as a business, rodeo and racing need a different policy — ask Emily and she will place it.

Payment options are available on premiums over $500 a year.

Equine mortality is where most conversations start, but it is rarely the whole picture. Emily places farm, ranch and livestock coverage through the same carriers, so one person handles all of it.
Individual horse coverage from a few days old through the senior years, across sport, western, show, racing and breeding programs.
Property and liability for the place your horses live and the business you run out of it — from a hobby farm with three head to a full boarding and training operation.
Every farm risk is individually underwritten and may need a questionnaire, waivers or facility photos. Emily will tell you up front what is needed.
Mortality coverage for the rest of the herd and the working animals that earn their keep.
Livestock programs have their own age, value and veterinary exam requirements, and are quoted case by case.
Emily grew up on a small hobby farm in Northern California, where her love for all things furry and four-legged began. Immersed in the Western and agriculture industries for most of her life, she has pursued owning and showing performance horses for the last 20 years.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Animal Science and Equestrian Studies from The University of Findlay and furthered her education with a Master of Business Administration. Since 2011 she has worked as a veterinary technician in both large and small animal hospitals — experience that shaped her understanding of exactly when insurance makes the difference in a horse's care.
Today she writes equine coverage through Key Retirement Solutions, protecting horses, farms, ranches, livestock, trainers and the livelihoods behind them.
